From growing up in Normanton to representative rugby league and now giving back to the next generation, Davin Crampton’s journey is grounded in family, culture, community and connection.

In this episode of the IN SPORT Podcast, Davin sits down with host Bo de la Cruz to reflect on the experiences that shaped him — from finding rugby league later than most to pursuing opportunities in North Queensland and discovering the importance of using those experiences to create pathways for others.

From Normanton to Representative Rugby League

A proud Tagalaka and Cook Islands man, with Māori heritage through his father, Davin grew up playing mostly AFL before returning to Normanton after school.

Rugby league became his game, but it was becoming a father in 2010 that gave Davin a new motivation to see how far he could take it.

Wanting to achieve something his son could be proud of, he committed himself to training and earned selection in the Foley Shield representative side.

His performances attracted the attention of North Queensland Cowboys recruitment staff and eventually opened the door to an opportunity with the Northern Pride.

Davin recalls being asked for footage of himself playing and tracking down a DVD of his games. Rather than trusting it to the post, he drove to Cairns and personally handed it over.

Soon after, an email arrived inviting him into preseason training.

It was an opportunity created through talent, but pursued through determination.

QMC, Culture and Connection

Davin also reflects on his long connection with the Queensland Murri Carnival and what QMC has meant to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players, families and communities.

The carnival has always represented far more than rugby league.

It’s where players from different communities come together, relationships are built and connections continue long after the games finish.

Davin and Bo yarn about the friendships, banter and memories created through carnival football, as well as the incredible amount of rugby league talent that exists across regional and remote Queensland.

For Davin, the ability is already there.

The opportunity is ensuring young players have access to the coaching, development, visibility and pathways that can help them take the next step.

Giving Back to the Next Generation

Today, Davin is taking his experience back into community.

Through his work and involvement with the Arthur Beetson Foundation Future Immortals Tour, he has the opportunity to spend time with young people, share practical football knowledge and provide the kind of guidance that can make a difference.

Whether it’s teaching better tackling technique, helping a young player understand positioning or simply having a yarn, Davin understands the power of showing up.

The tours also provide something valuable for the former players involved.

Returning to community, travelling together and reconnecting with a team environment brings back the camaraderie many players miss when their football careers finish.

As Davin explains, giving back is a two-way street.

Community receives something from the players — but the players come away with their cups filled too.

More Than Football

The conversation also explores what happens beyond a playing career.

Davin and Bo discuss why young athletes need to chase their sporting dreams while also developing opportunities outside the game.

Injuries happen. Careers change. Opportunities don’t always arrive as expected.

That’s why education, employment, personal development and having a plan beyond football matter.

Because success isn’t only about making it to the highest level.

It’s also about who you become, what you take from the experience and what you choose to give back.
