For more than four decades, the Bindal Sharks have represented something far greater than rugby league.
Built through community, strengthened by family and sustained by generations of volunteers and leaders, the Bindal Sharks story is one of resilience, opportunity, culture and a determination to create something lasting for young people across North Queensland.
In a special IN SPORT On Tour conversation, Kevin Aldridge, one of the founding figures behind the Bindal Sharks, reflects on the club’s beginnings and the people who helped build a legacy that continues today.
Building Something Bigger Than Football
The Bindal Sharks were established during a very different era for Indigenous rugby league.
Creating opportunities required determination, community support and people willing to keep pushing forward despite the barriers placed in front of them.
Kevin reflects on those early years and the challenges involved in establishing the club, from bringing people together and finding support to ensuring young players had opportunities to participate, travel and experience what rugby league could offer.
But from the beginning, the vision extended beyond what happened on the football field.
The club became a place where families could come together, young people could find belonging and players could be surrounded by mentors and community leaders invested in their future.
It was about creating pathways — not simply producing footballers.

Creating Opportunities for the Next Generation
Across the decades, rugby league has provided young people with experiences extending far beyond competition.
Travelling, representing their community, meeting people from different places and becoming part of a team created opportunities for young players to see what was possible for their futures.
Just as importantly, the club provided an environment where young people could be supported away from football.
That responsibility to mentor players both on and off the field remains one of the most significant themes of Kevin’s story.
Success wasn’t simply measured by how far someone progressed in rugby league. It could be found in the confidence they developed, the relationships they formed, the example they later set for their own children and the contribution they made to their community.

That is what makes the Bindal Sharks story so significant.
